ANIMAL FARM

Theme: The Soviet revolution

Point of view: the writer use third person

Starring: Mr. Jones, old major, snow ball, and napoleon.

Character:

1. Mr. Jones: the cruel farmer who holds the animals of the farm in Slavery.

2. Old major: an old venerable pig on the farm. He is the animal who inspires every one else to dream of being freed from Slavery under the humans.

3. Snow ball: a pig, he is one of the leaders of the rebellion.

4. Napoleon: a pig, a long with Snow balls the other main leader of the rebellion.

Chapter 1

As animal farm opens, Mr. Jones the owner of manor farm, is drunkenly and boring heading to bed. Animals gather in barn. As old major, the prize boar, tell them that he has thought about the brutal jives that the farm animals lead under human bondage and is convinced that a rebellion. Must come soon in which the animals throw off the tyranny of their human oppressors and come to live in perfect freedom and equality. Major teaches the animal beast of England, a song which will become their revolutionary anthem.

Chapter 2

A few days later, major dies. Animals under the leaders of the pigs. Begin to prepare for the rebellion. Two of the pigs, Snow ball and Napoleon elaborate major’s ideas into a complete system of think known as animalism. The rebellion comes much soon then any one thought, and the animals break free of Jones’s tyranny.

Semiotics

Semiotik Semiotik atau semiologi merupakan terminologi yang merujuk pada ilmu yang sama. Istilah semiologi lebih banyak digunakan di Eropa sedangkan semiotik lazim dipakai oleh ilmuwan Amerika. Istilah yang berasal dari kata Yunani semeion yang berarti ‘tanda’ atau ‘sign’ dalam bahasa Inggris itu adalah ilmu yang mempelajari sistem tanda seperti: bahasa, kode, sinyal, dan sebagainya.

PERFUME

1. Plot introduction

Set in 18th century in France. Perfume relates the story of Jean Baptiste Grenouile.

2. Character

v Grenouille’s mother

v Jean-Baptiste Grenouille: Protagonist. He is an orphan. He has no scent; he has no smell. And he creates perfumes with murdering 25 girls to take their scent.

v Jeanne Bussie: one of the women who adopt Granouille. And she is the first person who realizes that he has no scent, and claims he is sucking all the life out of her.

v Father Terrier: he is in charge of the church’s charities. First, he thinks Grenouille is a cute baby, but once Grenouille begin to sniff him, and he sends the baby to a boarding house.

v Madam Gaillard: she has no sense of smell, so she doesn’t know that Grenouille has no scent. Her goal in life is to save enough money to have a proper death and funeral. Ironically, she loses all her money in old age, dies a miserable death, and even buried.

v Grimal: he is a tanner. He lives near the river in the rue de la Mortellerie. Grenouille works for him until Baldini pays for him.

v Giuseppe Baldini: he is an old perfumer. He has a perfume shop filled with a strong of scents. The shop is located in the middle of a bridge, the Pont-au-Change. But after Grenouille leaves him, his house and warehouse plunge into the rivers as the bridge finally collapses.

v Chernier: baldini’s assistans.

v Pelissier: he is considered the most innovative perfumer in Paris.

v Taillade-Espinasse: marquis, liege lord of a town of Pierrefort and a member of parliament.

v Madame Arnulfi: she is a widow. She owns the perfume business of her dead husband and has a journeyman named Drout, and he is also her lover.

v Druot: arnulfi’s journeyman.

v Laure Richis: a beautiful red-headed girl. She is daughter of Antonio Richis. And she is central o Grenouille plans of creating a perfume that will people love him.

3. Point of view: the writer use third person.

4. Short summary

Grenouille is an orphan who no has smell. And he is rejected by people. One day he smells a scent and follow it and he find that the source of this beautiful scent is a girl. He kills her to preserve the scent. He dedicated his life to discovering the perfect scent. When he works for Baldini, he makes him become the most popular perfumer in Paris. On his way to Grasse, Grenouille become so disgusted by the scent of humanity and he spends seven years in a cave on top of the Massif Central. He realizes with a shock that he has no personal scent at all.

Grenouille journeys to Montpelier, where an amateur scientist, the Marquis de La Taillade Espinasse, and he use Grenouille become a test his thesis “so-called fluidium letale”. He makes Grenouille looks like a clean gentleman for the first time in his life. Grenouille creates a body odor for himself from the ingredients “cat shit, cheese, and vinegar”, and he is accepted by society. Moving to Grasse, Granouille becomes intoxicated by the scent of a girl, Laure. Meanwhile he begins on a career of murder of beautiful virgins for the scent he will make from Laure. Eventually Laure’s father realizes that Laure is to be the next victim. He flees with Laure but Grenouille pursues them and kills Laure, capturing her scent.

Grenouille is pardoned for his crimes, and Laure’s father wants to adopt him because when he apprehended and sentenced to death and one day of his execution. He is wearing Laure’s scent and instead of an execution the whole town becomes a massive orgy. But the experience of the power has dissatisfied him, because he is not loved for himself, but for perfume which he made.

In Paris, Grenouille approaches a group of low life people (thieves, murderer, etc), who don’t notice him approaching. They feel slightly disgusted having just eaten a human being, but they feel overwhelmed with happiness.

1. Summary

Hamid was a minister of Agriculture in Iraq for only two years, because he was dismissed by Saddam Husein. Hamid’s father is a carpet dealer never agreed if he was being the minister of agriculture. He always wanted him to join the family business.

One day he took his money from the Bank and changed it to the American dollars. The following Thursday, he and his pregnant wife (Shereen) took the bus to Ebril, and then took a taxi to Sulaimania, and another bus took them high into the hills of Kardistan. Hamid and his wife slept all the way through the long train journey to the Turkish capital, and woke up the following morning as refugees. They made visit to the America embassy to produce his diplomatic passport. So they move to the America and baggage of twenty three Turkish carpets. He decided to begin his new life in America. In the first year his carpets were sold out so he needed some new carpets for his stock. So his business flight to Istambul to took some new carpets.

On the plan he got a trouble. The plan’s wing was doesn’t work, so they had to do the transit in Baghdad airport. He was afraid if his passport would be checked, if any body knew that he was Iraq people he must be caught, so he told to the captain to ask some help. The captain suggested him to wear a uniform crew he wouldn’t be checked. But unfortunately Saad Al-Takrifi, one member of Saddam personal guard was suspicious about the crew. He checked the crew’s passport. He was angry when the captain gave him only fourteen passports. And there were fifteen crews. He wanted to check the crew by himself. In fact there were only fourteen crews there. Because Hamid was follow the plane which flight to New Delhi. The next day Hamid was go back to America and meet with his family again.

2. Character

  • Hamid: he is a nice man, but he betrayed his country, he loves his family and he is a good father.
  • Shereen: loyal to her husband, she is a good wife and a good mother.
  • Captain: helpful and nice.
  • Al-Takriti: bed tempered, resolute and accurate man.
  • Hamid’s father: honest man.

CHILDREN OF THE RIVER

This novel tells about a cultural conflict that emerges when a Cambodian family is transplanted to America. Sundara is a Cambodian but because of war, she follows her uncle to live in America. Sundara has an ambition; she wants to become a doctor to help Cambodians, and her family supports her. Sundara also has a good personality. She was a kind and nice girl, beautiful, patient, and she was a tough girl. Sundara has a problem, she was falling in love with Jonathan but her family disagreed with her affair with Jonathan. Sundara should continue her studies and marry a Cambodian. They thought that a Khmer person had to marry a Khmer too. Sundara has a big dilemma. Should she follow her family or choose Jonathan.

Sundara was always patient in solving her problems and she ones try to make her family happy. Sundara always thought that her mother didn’t love her because she asked Sundara to go by air plane. But her aunt Soka said that the plane may have been dangerous but she was still alive. Sundara also thought the baby is death was her fault. But Soka didn’t blame her.

One day Sundara and Soka went to the Portland International Airport. They so hurried because they wanted to meet Valinn. So they left Sundara and Pon. Pon was sick (diarrhea) Sundara was confused because she didn’t find Naro and Soka suddenly met Moni. At they were talking together. Sundara asked her what it’s like to be married. In fact Soka didn’t tell her about Moni’s story. Her family realized that in America foreigner must adapt at the culture and customs. Sundara gave permission from her family to make an affair with Jonathan. Finally Jonathan says that he loves Sundara.

Jonathan saw in Sundara an independent girl. She always helped her family to get some money. She always took care of her cousin. She loved them very much. Second, Sundara was a good looking, sincere and generous person. Third, Sundara always patient to solve her problem although she had a big dilemma but she life go with her flow. Last Sundara wanted to be a doctor and she always hoped that her dream would come true.

Jonathan sees in Sundara that she was a perfect girl and he loved her very much. Children of the River has a happy ending and I get important and interesting thing from it. I learn about that life must go with the flow. I learn how to solve the problems, and how I can become an independent girl.
